Supporting skills for transformation of the European rail sector

SERAS partners, sponsors and experts met at an international workshop in Frankfurt a.M. on 30 June – 1 July

Hosted by Deutsche Bahn in collaboration with the SERAS coordinator University of Genua, representatives of SERAS partners MAFEX, wmp consult, FH Erfurt, Polytechnical University of Madrid, PKP, Hitachi Rail, CER, Le CNAM, CESI, and Sapienza University of Rome gathered for an international workshop in Frankfurt.

During the two days, SERAS partners discussed and consolidated important activities of the projects’ workplan such as the SERAS Rail Skills Survey as a key element of Rail Skills Intelligence as well activities of enlarging the Rail Skills Alliance and preparing a joint promotion event of SERAS with the EU Commission at the InnoTrans 2026.

“The SERAS partners have the ambition of creating a permanent Rail Skills Alliance with direct support from and in collaboration with the European Commission (EC), the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA) and other key sectoral stakeholders at European Stakeholders and national level.” (Matthias Rohrmann, DB).

Workshop participants gained also from two keynote addresses on Artificial Intelligence provided by Prof. Christian Haas ( CoDiVe - Society for Digitalization and Behavioural Research) and from Katharina Kleinlein, Senior Advisor at H&Z Management Consulting on important drivers of change and latest rail trends impacting on the “Pulse of Rail”.

The workshop was also attended by a guest from Australia, who provided an input on the “Champions of Change Coalition”, a cross-sectoral initiative and success story on the promotion of gender equality that provides some important lessons to learn also for the European rail sector.
